A kitchen garden worthy of a Buckhead landscape
Buckhead's residential neighborhoods were built around their landscapes. In Tuxedo Park and Peachtree Heights, early homes came with grounds laid out by well-known landscape architects. Across Buckhead, from Chastain Park to Paces, many lots still carry the mature hardwoods, deep lawns, and creeks those plans were built around. A kitchen garden here should look like it has always been part of that landscape.
That starts with the trees. Buckhead's canopy is a big part of what makes these streets feel the way they do, and Atlanta protects it by law. We read your sun twice, once now and once at full leaf-out, and site the garden where the light actually falls. On a larger Buckhead lot, that's often somewhere other than where you'd first look. If a creek runs through your property, we plan around its protected stream buffer from the start. If your neighborhood has its own covenants, we work within those too.
Then the soil. Buckhead mixes estate-era homes with new construction, and a new house doesn't guarantee clean soil. If an older home once stood on your lot, lead from its paint can stay in the ground long after the house is gone. We test before planting edibles in the ground, and most of our Buckhead gardens use raised beds filled with clean soil over a barrier layer, built in materials chosen to match your home and hardscape.
A chef's garden, minutes from Peachtree Road
Buckhead already has one of Atlanta's best markets. The Peachtree Road Farmers Market, founded with chef Linton Hopkins, brings more than 70 local farmers and producers to the Cathedral of St. Philip every Saturday morning from March through December. It covers the staples beautifully.
So a Buckhead kitchen garden can be the one a chef would plant, full of things that are best, or only available, minutes after harvest: squash blossoms picked the afternoon of a dinner party, alpine strawberries too delicate for any market basket, herbs in varieties you won't find bundled at a stand, and salad greens cut to order. We can also add a cutting garden alongside the beds, so the same space supplies both the table and the flowers on it.
