Summerhill was founded in 1865 by freed slaves and Jewish immigrants, and for half a century Georgia Avenue was the heart of a thriving neighborhood. Then urban renewal, the highway, and stadium construction cleared much of it, and for decades acres of Summerhill sat under stadium parking. Since the Braves left, homes have been going back up on that ground, and gardens can grow with them.
That history is under your feet. At newer Summerhill homes, the ground is often construction fill and compacted subsoil rather than garden soil. At older lots, lead from houses long since torn down can linger. So we start every Summerhill garden with a soil test, and most of our gardens here use raised beds filled with clean soil over a barrier layer. It's the fastest way to good growing soil on ground that was pavement not long ago.
Many Summerhill homes come with compact yards, patios, or terraces rather than big back lots. Where the street trees are still young, the sun is often generous. We read your sun and your heat, including the extra warmth radiating off nearby pavement, and design for the space you actually have, whether that's a courtyard bed or a row of containers by the door. If your home has an HOA, we work within its rules, and we confirm the city's rules for your address before we design anything.
